My gaming time tends to be filled with Super Mario World, and Nethack.
But as soon as I saw World of Warcraft I fell in love with it. The game is split into two factions "Alliance" and "Horde", and both are waging a war against each other. To partake in this war, your character needs to learn the skills to fight with, and find groups to take raids against their enemies.
The groups or community aspect is something that took me by surprise - almost without question other players in your faction seem to be willing to help, and it rubs off. Friends are very easily made. The satisfaction of finding other players at your own level, and working together to defeat something otherwise impossible is immensely satisfying.
The demands on the computer aren't as high as you might think, but I did have to upgrade mine a little. Although you can play the game with dialup, I would recommend broadband if only to download the updates. There is a monthly fee to play the game, but if anyone does want to try it, I do have a 10-day guest pass which you can use.
I probably haven't done the game justice here. Read more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Warcraft |

 | If anyone does pick up the game, I am playing a Horde character called "Santi" on the Genjuros server, if they want a little ingame introduction.

frustratingly short capti | Now there lies a huge, gaping chasm with "life bin" written on it. I'm still trying to kick my Unreal Tournament 2004 habit. The online team play aspect is the big hook for me. Jumping in vehicles and having someone else climb in and operate the secondary weapons, or getting airborne and watching over the Leviathan mobile assault station as another player deploys it... great.
So I don't think I'll be getting into Warcraft any time soon, but I can imagine that it's really great!

frustratingly short capti | Don't forget "combat" on the Atari 2600...
And "video games" by Andrei Ellman:

 | Wow - The Fluffy AE still lives! The guy is a loon, and "video games" is truly inspired!

| This game is EVIL, I mean it's a great game, my main character had over 27 days non-stop play time, not counting my many many 'alt' characters. But I've given it up, it eats your life and free time A LOT more than other video games, especially if you have a tendency of procrastination anyway, it's incredibly hard to 'put down' as it where. So my advice, unless you don't have or want a life, or are extremely strong willed, DO NOT try this game, it'll eat you.

Just this guy, you know. | Ooh it took about three hours to install and download all the updates.
I've started and I'm some sort of undead Wizard, a bit like Paul Daniels! I've killed a couple of bat-like things so far. I'll report back later when I'm king of everywhere...

| My son is in the Horde but unfortunately American and British players are on separate servers, so he can't play with you or my friend's son, who he lured on to WOW when we were on holibobs in the summer. I don't think it's my sort of thing although I did enjoy King's Quest. My dh, simon, is playing Fear and some WWII game and as we share the office it gets very noisy. Luckily we all have our own PC and don't have to share game time!!

Owned by cats | This sounds like another mega time-waster.

Banantlers! | It'd be great, if it wasn't for the monthly fee. My budget doesn't quite stretch to it at the moment.
I've just bought Neverwinter Nights, though, which can be played in Multiplayer (I think). I think that's the same basic principle.
