Title:Consecutive number plate spotting (CNPS)
Submitter:ladydepfeffil

Submitter comments: I didnt submit this for a while as Ithought it was exactly the sort of thing that somebody would have already submitted. But I have searched quite widely and nobody appears to have come across it.

Very simply, the idea of Consecutive Number Plate Spotting is to spot number plates consecutively. Starting at one and working your way up to 999 (although i am under the solid belief that you could go further), spot number plates. There are however rigid rules.

You cannot skip a numer, and you cannot spot a two, then remember it when you have seen a one. You must physically see the numbers in order. Spot them consecutively, in fact. Numbers with a 0 in front of them are fine, eg. 05 is still a five. You cannot see a 763 and use it for a 7, a 76, a 6, a 63 or a 3, or nany number other than 763.

Be careful when spotting that you pay close attention to the gaps between chunks of numbers, making sure that you dont get so excited by seeing a 9 that you miss he fact that it is actually a WL9 78KD, because that is a 978.

For further information, make visitations to a better and more concise set of rules at:

I'm hot on your heels Stu - 22 for me

Wait, what?
Holy cow, the first 10 have got to be MURDER to find, and the first 99 almost as hard. There aren't many plates in the US that have a single-digit number standing on its own, nor are there many double digits. Most US plates have three-digit numbers which means you'd have to find an 001 to even start playing!

But I'll try. Smile

We're looking out for 19 ...

Lots and lots of people have personalised plates in the 1-20 range. I think there are probably more of those than average. After that it gets harder. Especially because the low numbers get transferred onto different cars, while the bigger 'boring' numbers will get scrapped.

You've got red on you
Hey, you're all beating me already! Im looking for a 13. Ive been playing for about 3 months now. My lack of success may be because I live in a stupid village with tiny amounts of cars. Or maybe Im just not very good at it.

this way lies madness, i tell you!

I had thought about starting this game before, after reading about it in Stu and JG 's blog. I'll start searching for Number 1 this afternoon.

Progress report Posted by Carol at 18 May 2004 08:18:
Argh! Despite vowing not to get sucked into this, I've found myself desperately searching for a 1. I don't suppose the word ONE spelled out on a numberplate counts?

I helped Stu with this last night. I note them down on his organiser gizmo if we see one whilst he's driving.

I think Henry may be the voice of reason here...

It occurred to me yesterday that ham radio license plates here in the states could easily give me 1 thru 6! (Ham callsigns have one and only one digit, which represents a "call area" or "district", hence KD4DCY means I'm in dictrict 4 (southeastern US)...

I'm currently attempting to compile the definative list of CNPS related websites. I've just found yours and have added it to my page:

Public Mouth > Links > Lee & Herring > CNPS

I hope you don't mind me adding your page.

Desmond Hoo (who?)

PS If you have a Yahoo ID then please feel free to add any CNPS (or Lee & Herring) websites that I haven't found yet.

Shameless self-promotion:

There is a CNPS forum at

CNPS Forum (MSN site, sorry!)

It's still in its nascent stages, and hasn't been prettified; membership is still low, but hopefully it'll take off the more people join.

I did this years ago (about 16, IIRC), got up to about 250-ish and drifted off.

When you lot get near my best I may start again!

Progress report Posted by glamhag at 4 Jun 2004 22:52:
Nowhere near it I'm afraid! Having been playing since September I'm currently looking for 153...

Progress report Posted by Mort at 20 Jul 2004 14:41:

I will devour your soul!
I know someone called Glamhag... hmm.

Anyway, I think I'll have a go at this at some point. No doubt I'll forget which number I'm on though. Or completely misunderstand the rules.

Whatever.

Been working on this for a couple of months now - got really stuck on 29 for about a month, but now I'm looking for 40.

Has anyone else noticed that you can look for a number for days, then see 2 of them a few minutes apart?

I think my record was about 2 weeks of nothing, then 6 in a row. Yes. Six!

...checks records... yes...

17th May: R26 KAB, R27 SRJ, D28 JHA, M29 SWJ, N30 HOD, N31 NAM.

My record was none in a row, followed by 10 minutes of exasperation, followed by giving up. Do I win a prize?

Posted by jane at 26 Aug 2004 19:23:
Well I'm back from my hols in the UK. We struck lucky and the rental car was upgraded from a Ford Mondeo to a Range Rover so I was able to look down on all the little cars to see the numbers easily!! The RR was so big it didn't matter which side of the road I drove on!
Anyway I got up to .................
8
Not so hot eh!

Forget it! Posted by Stu at 26 Aug 2004 20:28:
Sod this. Stupid game.

I am now reformed and can pass cars without even glancing at their plates.
