Some geocachers leave a personalised 'signature item' in every cache they visit. I've always liked this idea, and for a while have been looking for a signature item of my own.

I rarely find anything in a cache that excites me. Once or twice, though, I've taken away books which I might otherwise never have come across, but which I've thoroughly enjoyed. I therefore decided to start leaving copies of some of my favourite books in caches.

Of course, books don't make much of a signature item, because there's nothing personal about them. So I've created 'signature bookmarks'. In every cache I visit, I will be leaving a book with my signature bookmark inside. I'm producing fifty of them for now, in four different colours. When they run out I'll probably come up with a whole new design.

Each of the books will be one of the following:

• Three Men in a Boat, to Say Nothing of the Dog!
• The Picture of Dorian Gray
• The Canterville Ghost and Other Stories
• The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
• The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes

• The Collected Short Stories of Saki
• The Best of Saki
